Clean Up Time!

9/15/2021

Now is the time for removing, mowing down, and prepping to plant again after winter. All the cleanup of beds, repair of tools, construction, and maintenance is the final big push before snow comes to settle in. Anything that can't be brought under cover or inside has to be done in the next few weeks and if not it will have to wait until spring.
It can be bittersweet but also cathartic as you don't need to worry about pulling weeds around delicate seedlings or gently reaching between many stems to harvest a bloom. This it rip everything out time (except those lovely perennials which don't need much work any time of the year!)
And anything that isn't ripped out is mowed, mulched, and tarped to help it compost down before planting time next year.

This bed is all clean and ready for some perennials to go in before winter comes

The tomatoes better hurry, because in another week or so then out they come to make room for some salad mix, kale, and spinach. That also means there are only a week or two left of ripe cherry 'maters!

Everyday means more and more seed saved! This bowl of Marigold seeds will get sifted to remove the spent petals and other debris before getting their own seed packet design for next year I can't wait to share their little gifts of golden orange and yellow sunshine!

At least the microgreens are a weekly constant because with everything else fading in the field these get to stay warm and comfortable in the dragon dome greenhouse! #freshgreensallyearlong

Seeds aren't the only thing getting saved this time of year as I putter around, I also look for anything that is good to dry either for beauty or for food and tea. Like this Chamomile! And if it continues blooming long enough, I may just get some to share with ya'll!

Some plants are busy trying to finish getting those seeds ripe before it gets too cold. Luckily for these strawflower, they are under a low tunnel which will provide them some protection as the nighttime temps continue to drop

The chickens really enjoy the compost pile this time of year since so much good stuff gets added to it, and so do their doe friends that share the farm with us!

The kittens provide endless entertainment and mayhem. #siblings

Hella, ever the helper, likes to supervise the bed cleanup because there could be something crawly, squigly, or otherwise interesting hiding among all that stuff!
